Please note that we can currently only issue Animal Health Certificates for our existing clients, where we have administered the Rabies Vaccination.

The United Kingdom has become a PART 2 Listed country with respect to Pet Travel. This means that the new regulations are as follows:

Your pet will need:

• A microchip
• A valid Rabies vaccination (given at least 21 days before entry)
• Rabies blood tests are NOT required
• An Animal Health Certificate (AHC) issued by an Official veterinary Surgeon no more than 10 days before travel
• If you are going to Northern Ireland, Eire, Finland, Norway or Malta then dogs must be given an approved tape wormer by the vet at the time of examination for the AHC; this is recorded on the AHC.

AHCs are specific for the first country of entry into the EU; for example if you were entering France you will need a French certificate, or if entering into Spain you will need a Spanish certificate. The OV will provide the correct certificate.
There are specific “points of entry” for the EU ….see HERE for details.
A certified copy of the rabies vaccination details must be attached to the AHC (e.g. a copy of relevant sections of a vaccination card/pet passport).
An owner’s declaration must be attached to the AHC confirming the non-commercial nature of the movement.

Your pet’s animal health certificate (AHC) will be valid after the date of issue for
10 days for entry into the EU or Northern Ireland
4 months for onward travel within the EU (eg. from France into Spain/Italy or vice versa)
4 months for re-entry to Great Britain

Note

AHCs can only be issued for the following species:

• domestic dogs (Canis lupus familiaris)
• cats (Felis silvestris catus)
• ferrets (Mustela putorius furo)

AHCs must not be issued to:

• F1 hybrids of cats or dogs such as Bengal or Savannah cats
• any other species

There are different requirements if you are travelling to an non-EU country; notably Rabies blood tests may be required.

Rabbit policy benefits

As soon as you get a new pet, it is advisable to have a full health check with your vet to ensure that he/she is healthy and well. Vaccination has made a huge difference to the health of our animals. The vaccinations that we use today are extremely safe and protect our pets against some of the most serious infectious (and often fatal) diseases. Some horrible diseases, such as Canine Distemper, have become rare nowadays because of appropriate vaccinations.

ANNUAL BOOSTERS and HEALTH CHECKS are recommended to maintain immunity and to help prompt detection of other health problems.

A full basic immunisation programme for puppies should be started between 6 and 8 weeks of age, with the second vaccination given at 10 weeks old. The primary vaccination for kittens should start at 9 weeks of age, with the second vaccination given at 12 weeks old.

Any puppies and kittens receiving their initial vaccinations with us are entitled to a free 6-month-old health check with the vet when they reach that age.

Dogs should be vaccinated against:

• Distemper
• Parvovirus
• Infectious Hepatitis
• Leptospirosis (infectious to humans)

At present, Distemper, Parvovirus and Hepatitis vaccinations are given every 3 years, but Parainfluenza and Leptospirosis vaccinations need to be given annually.

Kennel Cough vaccination is recommended if your dog is likely to meet lots of other dogs (eg. kennels, dog training). This vaccine goes up the nose! It protects against a bacterial cause of the disease (Bordatella) and gives additional protection against a viral cause of the disease (Parainfluenza). The vaccine confers an immunity of 12 months.

Cats should be vaccinated against:

• Feline Herpes virus
• Feline Calicivirus
• Feline Infectious Enteritis (Panleukopaenia)

Feline Leukaemia Virus vaccination is strongly recommended if your cat is likely to meet lots of other cats outdoors.

Feline Immunodeficiency Virus can produce signs very similar to FeLV but unfortunately there is no vaccine presently available in the UK.

Rabbits should be vaccinated against:

• Myxomatosis and Viral Haemorrhagic disease (RHD-1 and RHD-2 strains) annually

The neutering of all pet cats is strongly advised and this can be done from 4 months of age if necessary.
Spaying of female cats stops unwanted pregnancies and the inconvenience of seasons every 3 weeks in the spring/summer.
Castration of male cats will generally help prevent urine spraying in the house and fighting behaviour.

The spaying and castration of pet rabbits is recommended; males can be castrated from 10 weeks of age, females from 12 weeks. Neutering prevents unwanted pregnancies, aggression between rabbits and it also prevents uterine cancer (womb cancer) in older female rabbits (which affects about 40% of unspayed females later in life).
